Google Maps Ads: Don’t Sleep on Local

The momentum behind local advertising on Google is accelerating rapidly. According to an analysis by PPC Land, the proportion of local business listings containing ads in Google Search results climbed to 22% by January 2026 — a 733% increase from November, just three months prior — confirming that Google is monetizing local search results at an unprecedented pace.

One local option for advertisers is Google Maps Promoted Pins, which leverage existing image assets and appear in key spots within Maps, including Browse, Directions, and Entity/Place Details modes. Designed to drive foot traffic, these pins put businesses in front of users as they actively explore locations and points of interest on Maps. For live entertainment, attractions, and cultural institutions with physical venues, the placement provides unique value — reaching hyperlocal audiences at the exact moment they are navigating and discovering nearby experiences.

The economics are equally compelling. Businesses running Maps ads report 20–30% increases in visits depending on category, and the average CPC runs materially below traditional Search — making it an efficient complement to an existing paid search investment. The most notable recent development is Google’s integration of Promoted Pins into Demand Gen campaigns, which allows advertisers to extend Maps placements alongside YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Display ads within a single campaign structure — reaching users across key moments in their search journey. This Demand Gen integration is currently in limited availability, and we look forward to testing it soon.
